"Commander Chris and the Mystical Orb" has plenty to offer young adults who enjoy the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Author Mark Mattison's canvas is a faraway galaxy where a race of cyborgs threaten the diversity of alien cultures with utter tyranny. The unlikely hero is a skateboarding teenager, whisked into an interstellar portal by a physics mishap. On earth, Chris Morinas struggles to fit in at school and contends daily with the alcoholism of his caretaker aunt. But on the other side of the universe, he has aged 10 years and becomes the hope of all civilization -- an "Extragalactic" pursuing a momentous destiny.Mattison has a first-rate imagination. His pages are packed with swashbuckling action, suspense and landscapes teeming with alien life. He bears the mark of all effective science fiction writers: a knack for giving plausible and detailed scientific explanations for the bizarre. And there's no shortage of excitement. The reader takes a ride through many hairpin turns as the hero and his comrades escape wave after wave of determined, technologically sophisticated foes.
The characters in "Commander Chris" are compelling. There's Ava, the tough-minded, blaster-packing redhead with whom Chris is obviously smitten. And Pi, the personable android who engineers a flying board to carry the young skateboarder though his adventures. Ava's wise Uncle K. is a scientist brimming with useful insights. Rounding out the crew is a cleric named Majubar (possessor of the mystical orb) and an insect-like communications officer whom Chris dubs "Zach" (short for Zacharinteleonovinach).
One recurring feature gives "Commander Chris" an edge over many other books in the genre: Positive values abound throughout the story. Chris is a young man animated by compassion, self-sacrifice and justice -- values that sometimes surprise the aliens in his company. Though obviously flawed and given to youthful foibles, he inspires and motivates those around him.
"Commander Chris and the Mystical Orb" is a fun trek into the wormhole and back. Young adults will find it even more appealing than a platter of Triperian spice rolls.

This book is aimed at the teen/young adult market...but it is an enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys good fantasy fiction. A totally captivating page turner...I suspect we will be hearing a lot about this author in the years to come. Highly recommended!
This is a riveting book...kept my attention to the end and very well written! I could hardly put it down. I hope he writes more books.
Sci-fi fans.. if you liked the STAR WARS movies you'll enjoy this book! Once you get started reading it's hard to put down.. lots of cliff hanger outer space action throughout. Fun read.. I'd recommend it for kids thru adults (I'm 57!).
A really good story. An adventure with a positive message for young people of all ages. I like the lead character and want to continue to get to know him better... I hope there will be a sequal forthcoming. I've already passed it along to my children for them to read (it's a rare book that can entertain both a 46 year old Dad and his teens and even pre-teens. Recommended!
Mark Mattison has woven together a smart and entertaining scy/fi story that is also wholesome and uplifting. Intelligent and knowledgable, Mark has a way of bringing out of this world ideas into a plausible story line that keeps you turning pages until the end. A great, indepth story of one young man's feelings about himself and his surroundings and how his impression of himself slowly changes over the course of the story. I fully enjoyed Commander Chris and The Mystical Orb.
Though I don't typically give reviews of any sort, this is a book worthy of as good a review as I can give. It was a fun read for me. If I'm reading any book that makes me "look forward" to the next page, to discover what's about to happen, I consider that a good read. Commander Chris and the Mystical Orb did that for me.
Commander Chris and the Mystical Orb stops nothing short of the most delightful book I have read in several years. And although it is written for a teen and young adult audience, anyone with an interest in quality fiction will find this book enjoyable beyond many of its contemporaries.
The young Chris Morinas is a character that most of us can relate to on many levels. Most of us have probably been or felt unpopular, unattractive, and misunderstood at certain times in our lives, not least in our teen years. But the opportunities for Chris to show his quality throughout the story will quickly ease our empathies and take us soaring into a place beyond our wildest dreams. Chris's adventures in another galaxy with Ava, Pi, "Zach", and many others are sure to draw any reader into a world of endless possibilities and yet a world that at times feel so real.
Although this is Mark Mattison's first novel, he writes as good as or even better than many of today's popular writers. Riddled with suspense, humor, and an unbelievable cast of characters, Mattison delivers a first-rate novel. I heartily recommend this book not only to Science Fiction fans, but to anyone who enjoys a good book.
